This PhD scholarship offers three years’ funding, including doctoral programme tuition fees and a stipend of approximately £15,000 per year for candidates wishing to commence their studies in September 2018. The successful candidate will also receive a generous research support and conference allowance. You will also have access to a robust doctoral research training programme, dedicated research resources, training in transferable skills, visiting speaker seminar programme, and associate with existing research centres and groups. In addition, all students are encouraged to undertake training and development in teaching and deliver teaching and/or research assistantship duties on a paid basis to further enhance their experience in preparation for their future careers.
The Project
The UK Modern Slavery Act, introduced in 2015, calls for companies to account for their involvement in modern slavery. In particular, the Transparency provision (s.54) requires organisations with a global annual turnover of £36m, operating any part of their business in the UK, to state annually what steps they are taking to address modern slavery in any part of their supply chains or their own business. This provision attempts to positively impact on corporates role in advancing human rights by prescribing practical ways of integrating slavery-related concerns within enterprise risk management system.
Further research is needed to understand the role of corporations in tackling modern slavery within their global value chains, and the major shift in the relationship between corporations and society based on new models of global governance.
The project will be based in the Business & Human Rights Catalyst, a multidisciplinary research initiative based in AMBS. The Business and Human Rights Catalyst is one of the first human rights programmes worldwide to be hosted in a business school. It aims, through world-leading research and policy recommendations, to have a real impact on the rights of some of the most vulnerable people in society.
Entry Requirements
Applications for this project are sought from exceptional UK, EU and international students with an outstanding academic background.
Applicants must have a First or Upper Second Class Honours degree (or equivalent) and hold or expect to obtain a Masters level qualification with Distinction. English Language requirements (where required) are IELTS 7.0, TOEFL 623 (100 ibt), PTE 66.

The Project
The United Nations Human Rights Council endorsed a set of Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights (the UNGP’s) in June 2011. The endorsement of the UNGP’s was significant for two reasons: first, they clarify that the human rights responsibilities of nation states apply to all of state activities, including its dealings with business; second they require business to take responsibility for their impacts on human rights. Corporations’ responsibility for human rights fundamentally challenges our established models of the role of business in society and what corporations are, and should, be accountable for.
Businesses are starting to take this responsibility seriously and human rights is beginning to enter management systems and practices. However, as yet we know little about how human rights responsibilities are being managed by businesses, what or who these practices involve, or how effective they are. This seminal study will begin to provide answers to these questions.
